ON JUNE 5, 1944 AT 11 P.M., THE AMERICAN ALLIED FORCES PARACHUTED ABOVE SAINTE-MERE-EGLISE DURING OPERATION OVERLORD. 15,000 MEN WERE DROPPED ON THE VILLAGE AND ITS SURROUNDINGS, MAINLY FROM THE US 82ND AIRBORNE DIVISION, AS WELL AS NUMEROUS PARATROOPERS FROM THE 101ST AIRBORNE DIVISION DUE TO DROP ERRORS. JOHN STEELE, ONE OF THEM, WAS HIT IN THE FOOT BY A BULLET, COULD NOT CONTROL HIS PARACHUTE AND FINALLY LANDED ON THE CHURCH TOWER AROUND 4:00 A.M. HE TRIED TO FREE HIMSELF FROM HIS PARACHUTE WHILE IN THE SQUARE, ALL AROUND THE CHURCH, THE BATTLE RAGED. HE THEN DECIDED TO PLAY DEAD IN ORDER TO AVOID SERVING AS A TARGET FOR THE ENEMY. AFTER MORE THAN TWO HOURS, A GERMAN SOLDIER CAME TO TAKE IT DOWN. STEELE WAS TREATED AND TAKEN PRISONER, ESCAPED THREE DAYS LATER, REJOINED ALLIED LINES AND WAS TRANSFERRED TO A HOSPITAL IN ENGLAND. With a construction area of about 320,000 square meters, the main stadium of the Dongan Lake Sports Park will host the opening ceremony of the event. The roof of the stadium is made up of more than 12,000 colored glazed glass pieces, forming the shape of the "sun bird," making the stadium look like a silver flying saucer when viewed from above. The multi-functional gymnasium of the Dongan Lake Sports Park has 15,000 fixed seats and 3,000 movable seats around the stands, which can be reduced according to demand.
